It takes community collective action to take on complicated climate problems. We all have the power to work with our neighbours and peers to bring about positive change and resiliency at a local level. Wonderful initiatives are possible when we work in relation to one another!

\nThe Climate Leadership Badge is an invitation to take a leading role on climate issues in your community – whether you’re a seasoned organizer or someone interested in stepping up in a new way. The program is designed to support you in connecting with others in real-life, to work in collaboration.

If you’re ready to learn with others in real-time, The Ecology Action Centre is offering a series of workshops, events, and other opportunities to hone your skills, take initiative, and get involved! You’ll learn from seasoned advocates and community organizers and gain the skills you need to start something good in your community!

There are many nonprofit organizations and grassroots initiatives that are looking for support in the amazing climate work they do! Whatever your skill level, there are ways to step up and lend a hand. Being a climate volunteer could mean volunteering directly with an environmental organization – but it might also mean supporting community food work, affordable housing, active transportation, or Reconciliation. Start a Climate Initiative with Others

\n
\n

Personal climate action is valuable – but when we widen the circle and collaborate with others, we can often make more impact. Taking action with others – whether it’s with friends, neighbours, or unexpected allies – also helps us overcome the feeling that we’re on our own. We really are stronger together!

\nStarting a climate initiative doesn’t need to be a huge undertaking. It can be anything: starting a Climate Connections study group, coordinating with neighbors for the next extreme weather event, starting a free food pantry... the ideas are endless.

Designer of the Leadership badge, Nailah (She/They/We) is a ritual based artist, community worker and Teleniohiet active in Mi'kma'ki. They spend their days coworking closely with Community Garden Kjipuktuk, painting portraits inspired by the Black diaspora, and dabbling in many forms of artistic expression. A budding painter and tech artist, they merge the world of sustainable technology with African Indigenous motifs and communal values.

Designer of the Climate Resilience badge, Donica (she/they) is an artist and scientific illustrator, currently living in K’jipuktuk, Nova Scotia. They have long held a passion for nature and being outdoors. Her love of flora, fauna and fungi is always present in their art. Donica’s work is inspired by nature, pop culture and the social sciences, and includes scientific journals, quilts, watercolours, comics and cyanotype prints in her art.
