Abstract: This database is composed of "an annual list of the 500 largest industrial corporations in the U.S., published by Fortune magazine. The corporations are ranked based on such metrics as revenues, profits, and market value", as defined by InvestorWords.com - http://www.investorwords.com/2056/Fortune_500.html The entities represented in this dataset are the companies' headquarters location only. This dataset does not include branches, divisions, annexes, or subdivisions of these company headquarters. There are no entities located in Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, or the Virgin Islands included in this dataset. The locations of points were geocoded to street address and are not necessarily located on-entity, unless stated otherwise. Data shown are for the fiscal year ended on or before Jan. 31, 2017.

As a result, this shapefile may have attribution and metadata errors resulting from the conversion process. The following are known issues: null values may have been changed to 0s (zeros) or to blank values, numbers (including latitude and longitude) may have been rounded up or down, there may be issues with Unicode character strings, and time cannot be stored in a date field. Field names may have been truncated to no longer than 10 characters or completely changed, lengthy string attributes may have been truncated to 254 characters, and attribute columns may have been deleted. Shapefiles do not support coded domains and subtypes therefore the original file geodatabase attribution and metadata information for coded domains and subtypes could be incorrect or missing in the shapefile version. Credits: This Fortune 500 Directory was prepared under the direction of list editor Scott DeCarlo. Income statement and balance sheet data provided by the companies were reviewed and verified against published earnings releases, 10-K filings, and annual reports by reporter Douglas G. Elam and accounting specialists Rhona Altschuler, and Cappy Lyons. Markets editor Kathleen Smyth used those same sources to check the data for earnings per share. In addition, we used data provided by Thomson Reuters and S&P Global Market Intelligence to calculate total return and market capitalization. Database administrator Santhosh Varghese provided technical support. The data verification process was aided substantially by information provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. Other sources used were Hoover’s and Lexis Securities Mosaic. Data shown are for the fiscal year ended on or before Jan. 31, 2017.

Description: Points were geolocated on <http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/geocoder/> using the batch geocoding address tool. Due to the quantity of addresses requiring processing, a Bing Maps API key (found at <https://www.bingmapsportal.com/>) was used to complete the process. By using a Bing Maps API key, the addresses were then matched against Bing Maps, which generates the lat/long values which are required for ArcMap's XYevent tool. The result yielded 490 records being successfully geolocated to 'address', while the remaining 10 varied widely for locational accuracy - ie. located on city, county, zipcode, region, intersection, etc. These 10 points were manually verified using Google Maps and placed on-entity based on Address information.
