Hurricanes require the following: seawater at least 27 degrees Celsius, warm, moist, & unstable air, weak upper level winds, and the Coriolis effect.

They also form between latitudes of 5 and 20 and move to higher ones.

Due to the Carolinas' slightly higher latitude and warm, moist higher, hurricanes are not uncommon in the area.

Additionally, the Bermuda High causes the path of hurricanes on the east coast of the United States to follow a path that typically rounds across the Carolinas' coastlines.

Hurricane Florence became national news around August 30, 2018 and continued to be in the public eye until mid-September.

Areas of extreme and high risks of loss are areas close to the shore, as well as, areas with greater population densities.

Due to the risk of many lives, evacuation zones and warnings were issued, during Hurricane Florence.

Soon President Trump was interviewed concerning the state of Hurricane Florence, after he declared a State of Emergency in NC.

After President Trump's declaration of a State of Emergency in North Carolina on September 7th, Governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina declared a state of emergency for the state in order to appeal to the federal government for reimbursement of emergency funding.

Just a few days later, McMaster issued an Executive Order for mandatory evacuations across the SC coastline.

Once the mandatory evacuation was declared, most of these SC residents evacuated, but some were left with no option for evacuation.

Without funds or transportation, some of the state's most vulnerable populations (those in homelessness and/or poverty) were stuck in the path of Hurricane Florence.

Many lost their jobs as the hurricane approached. The lack of income and this natural disaster inevitably caused homelessness for many.

As the storm escalated in expected risk and category level, local shelters began to close.

These shelters did provide transportation to emergency shelters, along with supplying some food, bedding, and other basic supplies, to their residents.

Schools are shut down, used for emergency shelters, or are damaged from the intense weather.

The first shelter in SC to become full to capacity was an Emergency Red Cross shelter housed in Goose Creek High School in Charleston County.

Within a few days, the shelter reached 400 people.

Additionally, many coming to these shelters were those living at motels, those who are always one paycheck from homelessness, or homeless individuals who were already living in shelters or on the streets.

Supplies begin to run out in overpopulated shelters.

As more evacuees arrived, those in the shelter became frustrated with the lack of cots and blankets or the limited food options, especially for individuals with illnesses.

While the Carolinas have a number of shelters available to individuals, supplies during natural disasters have been a consistent  problem.

Overcrowding can quickly happen when individuals can only find transportation to a certain point, are only aware of certain evacuation plans, etc.

While conditions in shelters are not glamorous, the situation for many without funds or transportation is worst.

These individuals are stuck in the storm's path. No public transportation options. No money to evacuate.

In these situations, some call on others to be good neighbors to assist in evacuation. However, communal support is not always a reality for all.

Luckily, in some cases, the National Guard is working to get people to safety, no matter their housing scenario.

The story doesn't end when the storm does - the pain continues for many.

Because of Hurricane Michael and Hurricane Florence, many families are now homeless, either by physical destruction of property and/or loss of income.

According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, about 98,000 low income renter households were effected across the Carolinas.

Many of these individuals could not afford flood insurance, despite federal requirements to have such insurance.

FEMA sheltered 15,000 people across the Carolinas.

Due to lack of flood insurance and/or expendable income, many individuals are now faced with a new identity as homeless.

Therefore, most of these individuals are left with no income to rebuild. They will simply wait on the possibility of funding from the government - which can take years to be settled.

Some have been homeless before and view this as another set back that must just be face by \"keeping [your] head up out there, and keep believing in God.\"

These individuals will be set back for longer periods of time than their counterparts, with flood insurance or simply in higher socio-economic statuses.
