pointOfContact 2022-05-20 ISO 19139 Geographic Information - Metadata - Implementation Specification 2007 2020-03-20 publication Douglas Geverdt National Center for Education Statistics Administrative Data Division originator The National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) Education Demographic and Geographic Estimate (EDGE) program develops annually updated point locations (latitude and longitude) for postsecondary institutions included in the NCES Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The IPEDS program annually collects information about enrollments, program completions, graduation rates, faculty and staff, finances, institutional prices, and student financial aid from every college, university, and technical and vocational institution that participates in federal student financial aid programs under the Higher Education Act of 1965 (as amended).  The NCES EDGE program uses address information reported in the annually updated IPEDS directory file and collaborates with the U.S. Census Bureau’s Education Demographic, Geographic, and Economic Statistics (EDGE) Branch to develop point locations for all institutions reported in IPEDS. The point locations in this data layer were developed from the 2015-2016 IPEDS collection. Standard geographic codes, such as FIPS codes for states, counties, state legislative districts, and congressional districts are used when encoding spatial entities. EDGE performed spatial data tests for logical consistency of the codes during the creation of the shapefiles. Most of the codes for geographic entities except states, counties, Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs), Combined Statistical Areas (CSAs), New England Statistical Areas (NECTAs), state legislative districts, and congressional districts were provided to the Census Bureau by the USGS, the agency responsible for maintaining the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Feature attribute information has been examined but has not been fully tested for consistency. Data completeness of the postsecondary schools shapefile reflects the contents of the IPEDS universe at the time the shapefile was created.
