Abstract: A borehole is any hole drilled or dug into the ground. The hole is usually deep, narrow and round. The material (soil and or rock) from the hole is collected and tested in a laboratory to find out the structure and type of the soil and or rock beneath the ground. A borehole record or log is a written description of the material that comes out of the ground as a result of drilling a borehole. Bedrock boreholes are usually deep (can reach up to 1000m). We drill boreholes to improve and update our bedrock, quaternary sediments and groundwater maps. We store the samples (core) and these are available to view by appointment. We’re in the process of scanning all the core and the images will be available online when completed. This map shows the location of the bedrock boreholes drilled in Ireland by the GSI or submitted to the GSI from mineral exploration companies. This Bedrock boreholes map is to the scale 1:50,000. This means it should be viewed at that scale. When printed at that scale 1cm on the map relates to a distance of 500m.It is a vector dataset. Vector data portray the world using points, lines, and polygons (areas). The borehole data is shown as points. Each point holds information on the location of the borehole (X and Y coordinates), Borehole ID (borehole identifier), the length of the hole (metres), the angle the hole was drilled, azimuth (direction the hole was drilled), comments, county, 1:50,000 sheet number, prospecting licence number (PL), data source and contains a url to download a PDF of the borehole log.
-
Purpose: Boreholes provide vital information on the characteristics and properties of the ground beneath our feet. The information helps us determine the nature of the ground and can help identify any visible or potential hazards.
Materials extracted from beneath the ground supply everything we need to sustain our life as we know it. From the fuels we use to run our cars, to the numerous minerals that are in your mobile phone, to the minerals and water in the food and drink we rely on. These materials include rocks, minerals and fluids (eg water) or gas contained in rocks.
Data from boreholes and geological reports are vital for finding out where these materials are located and if they are suitable for extraction. eg water, coal, oil, sand, gravel gypsum etc. The data also helps to monitor the availability of the resource eg water. Rock properties and structures such as faults impact how water and/or pollutants move below the surface. Drinking water can be protected by locating potential polluting operations, such as landfills, away from groundwater.
Geothermal energy is the energy stored in the form of heat beneath the surface of the earth. It can be used to supply heat and hot water. It can also be used to cool a house by removing surplus heat energy and putting it into the ground. Boreholes, along with bedrock, subsoil and aquifer maps are used to help decide if the ground under a site is suitable for geothermal energy extraction.
Engineers need this information when they are designing structures (houses, buildings, roads, etc.). They need to know the quality of the ground (strength and depth of soil, if rock and or groundwater is present) and how structures can be built in and on it. They use the information to decide the best supports and foundations needed for structures so that they don’t collapse. They can also find out if there are any underground obstructions, groundwater, faults etc. which could result in additional costs or delays.

Lineage statement: In Ireland, mineral exploration companies must obtain a licence from the Government to carry out any exploration activities such as drilling boreholes. They must submit the exploration reports after 6 years or upon surrender of the licence. Reports were submitted to the Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) between 1957 and 2002. Since then they have been submitted to the Mineral Exploration & Mining Division (EMD) of the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC).
The GSI holds 799 box files of reports relating to mineral exploration carried out in the Republic of Ireland from 1957 to 2002. These include written reports, maps, geophysical data, geochemical data and boreholes logs.
Details from these reports were manually entered into an oracle database named Open File via a visual basic application named Geodata. The reports were scanned and can be accessed using the geodata application and they are also available on GSI’s online digital archive for maps and documents (GOLDMINE). Both Geodata (Open File database) and GOLDMINE can be accessed on the GSI website.
EMD records can be accessed on the DECC website.
To produce this dataset, borehole logs were extracted from the open file database for all holes drilled within the study area. An ESRI geodatabase was created with attributes such as Borehole_ID, X, Y, Length of borehole in metres, Angle, Azimuth, comments, county, prospecting licence number (PL), data source and url (to download a PDF of the borehole log).
In many cases, coordinates were provided as part of the log for each hole. Sometimes these needed to be converted from Irish National Grid (ING) to Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM) using ESRI software (ArcMap). Some holes, mostly older holes, didn’t have coordinates. They were only drawn on a paper map which had been scanned. In these cases, the map was georeferenced (location information was added using Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) basemaps as a reference) or the location was identified by eye on geofererenced maps (historic & OSI) and the coordinates were recorded.
The data was compared to the holes in the EMD database and any additional holes missing from the GSI open file database were extracted from the EMD database and added in to this dataset.
Data was checked visually using tools within ArcGIS and geofererenced maps (historic and OSI).
The GSI also drill boreholes to improve and update bedrock, quaternary sediments and groundwater maps. Any GSI boreholes drilled are included in the dataset.
The logs are hosted by the GSI online as PDFs and URLs are provided within the dataset.
