Abstract: (Link to Metadata) The VPLD layer adheres to the latest updated data standard and schema finalized in November 2020 by a committee of state and regional stakeholders effectively replacing its predecessor "CONSPUB" (See - https://vcgi.vermont.gov/document/vermont-protected-lands-geospatial-data-standard). Originally a project of the University of Vermont Spatial Analysis Lab, many of the original cooperating organizations are still involved with the VPLD. Current partners include: The Nature Conservancy (TNC), The UVM Spatial Analysis Lab (UVM-SAL), U.S. Forest Service Green Mountain National Forest (USFS-GMNF), USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), VT Agency of Natural Resources (ANR), VT Center for Geographic Information (ADS-VCGI), VT Housing and Conservation Board (VHCB), VT Land Trust (VLT), Upper Valley Land Trust (UVLT), Green Mountain Club (GMC) and regional planning commissions throughout the state. Other state level, non-profit and regional entities also contribute to this dataset. The VPLD is based on an updated version of the original Protected Lands Coding Scheme reflecting decisions made by the Protected Lands Database Work Group to plan for a sustainable update process for this important geospatial data layer. VCGI continues to coordinate a distributed data maintenance and compilation effort for updates adhering to this data standard and welcomes additional submissions.
Purpose: The Vermont Protected Lands Database (VPLD) is a geospatial database, or GIS layer, of parcels that are currently protected from development through public ownership, private ownership, or protection mechanisms such as easements. The VPLD was designed to facilitate land-conservation planning and related efforts in Vermont.

Update to initial release of the CadastralConserved_PROTECTEDLND layer integrating 156 features outstanding from original CONSPUB layer and 663 records from the UVM-SAL VT Town Forest Database (107 forest features in original release were overwritten with updated features and attribution). A net total of 712 new features are now represented in the second release of PROTECTEDLNDs. Most of these features are local in nature, i.e., town forests, "watershed" designations, gun clubs, and other recreation areas. Many of the manually reviewed and deleted features were superseded by updated geometries, water access points that were misplaced, or obvious errors, i.e., a sliver of national refuge in an obviously residential area.
