ONS Geography are a business area of ONS that provides the geographic data and services to support the production of high-quality statistics.


We provide widely-used key geographic products, such as digital boundary sets, postcode directories, area codes, place name reference material, maps and other geographic metadata.


We also provide high-quality geographic support functions and services. These include a Geographic Information System (GIS) and cartographic service, the provision of best practice for geographic referencing, guidance on the presentation of statistics, and the policy framework for geography in National Statistics.


Our main customers are statistical production areas within ONS and a wide range of external statistical data suppliers and customers, including other government departments, local authorities, academia, the NHS, the devolved administrations and Eurostat.


We maintain strong links with external organisations, such as Ordnance Survey (OS) and Royal Mail, in order to maintain the geographic intelligence required to provide a UK corporate geographic support service.


We also contribute to other external groups, such as the Association of Geographic Information (AGI), the European Forum for Geostatistics (EFGS) and the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM).
